Why should we fix Balboa Golf Course?
This question has been asked by many of you since you see that Balboa is a beautiful course, the greens are nice, etc, -- so why in the world would we or should we tear it apart to fix what doesn’t look like it is broken? The answer lies beneath the surface, literally. The irrigation system is a major problem and greatly in need of repair. When the course was built, the piping installed was assembled in a sub-standard manner. Since then it has developed thousands of leaks and is in need of complete renovation. If the repair isn’t done, the costs will be greater as time goes on. Since the repair needs to be done, it would only make sense to put in hybrid Bermuda grass which is more cold tolerant, adding forward tees improves the drainage and renovating other areas such as cart paths can be done since the course will be torn up anyway. This project is on hold due to the economic hardships that have occurred in the past year, but it will remain on the “to do” list because it is necessary for us to maintain our courses and keep them in the best possible condition for all of our investments in Hot Springs Village today and in the future. Also, let’s not forget that part of the last assessment increase in 2004 was implemented to refurbish Balboa; so the property owners deserve the implementation of that commitment!

Magellan on the Cutting Edge Again! Submitted by Renee Steinpreis POA Golf Committee Education Chairperson
The staff at Magellan Golf Course seems to enjoy trying new things and implementing programs that benefit the Village Golfers! They had started the Adopt-A-Hole program a few years ago, and that has been implemented on the other Village Courses. There are many holes adopted and that has made a difference in the maintenance and beauty of our courses. The next program that they are going to implement is a “Flag Program” which has been developed to improve pace of play with a less confrontational system. Flags will be used on the Marshal’s Cart to indicate to the group playing how they are doing according to their start time. If the Flag is green, that means you are doing well, keep up the good pace. If the Flag is yellow, you are out of position and need to improve your pace to re-establish your proper position. If the Flag is red, you are seriously out of position and the play coordinator will assist you in re-establishing your proper position. Your group may be asked to pick up and move ahead to the appropriate position. The goal of this new system is to ensure an enjoyable pace of play for everyone, members and guests alike. Magellan staff will have a sign in each cart to remind you what the colors mean, and thank you for your effort in doing your best with the implementation of this new program. This Pace of Play Management System will be enforced at Magellan Golf Course starting September 28.
